The Red-capped Manakin is a species of bird whose males are well known for performing incredibly fast dances to encourage females to mate with them. Their wings move so fast that they require a high-speed video camera in order see them move. Their wings move even faster than a hummingbird’s! They also have a distinct mating call, but unlike other birds, the sound doesn’t come from their mouths. It’s actually the sound of their wing tips running together! Watch this video to see them in action! The Moonwalk segment begins at 2:00 into the video. http://www.youtube.com/v/T2Bsu4z9Y3k&hl=en&fs=1 PBS has more information about Kim Bostwick’s research on these incredible birds.
